Just snitching an idea from
phaballa. 10 albums that have changed/impacted my life and/or music taste. This would be so much easier to do with songs in my case, but I may save that for later. In order that I got them (which is how I order my cds in their case)
1. 1984- Van Halen
Ah, the music of my childhood. Yes, seriously. My mom had something by Huey Lewis and the News (it may have been a hits collection, but I'm not entirely sure) and my dad had this. No road trip was complete without a little Jump or Hot for Teacher. That and Addicted to Spuds from Weird Al's Polka Party album.
2. Some Gave All- Billy Ray Cyrus
I got this album in first grade, back when music still came on casette tapes. I put this in my walkman and wore that tape out. It was the first music I remembered listening to that wasn't, you know, Raffi. Do I still listen to it? Hell no. I developed taste. But all the girls I went to school with at the time thought Billy Ray was hot stuff, and even though I resisted for half a year, I eventually succumbed to the craze. I was mortified when I found out he was appearing on the Disney channel recently. But believe it or not, for some reason I still know most of the words to Achy Breaky Heart and These Boots are Made For Walkin.
3. The Sign- Ace of Base
The album that started it all. Billy Ray was a phase, Ace of Base is what really got me into music. I was as big a fan as one could be at 8, and came to own all 3 albums (yes, they had three, and you should all check out The Bridge b/c it is probably even better than the Sign. Don't bother with Cruel Summer though.) Before I actually got the album, for Christmas I believe, I was never sure if it was called The Sign or The Sun, so requesting it at things such as my aunt's wedding was a problem. Ace of Base was my favorite group up until I discovered you know who. And my mom still cannot stand it to this day.
4. Cracked Rear View- Hootie and the Blowfish
I got this album when I was in fourth grade. At the time, I was still buying/requesting albums based on one song, which got me a lot of crappy albums, but this one did not disappoint at all. I shelved this one for quite a while, as I did most of the stuff I bought that year, and when I pulled it all out again, I decided that despite the Edwin McCains and Donna Lewises, I didn't have such a bad taste in music at 10 after all.
5. Nsync- Nsync
I could make a long list of how this album has impacted my life, but I shouldn't need to tell you that. Here we goooo
6. Country Grammar- Nelly
Before this album, I thought rap was nothing but crap. And well, mid-nineties, most of it was. Course, now it's still pretty much crap. But this was not only tolerable, I liked it. Country Grammar, since it's not very explicit paved the way for other rap songs to enter into my playlist that were a but more explicit- ie my favorite, The Next Episode. Knwoing all the words to the title track also gained me a few cool points in school. Too bad most of the album beyond the singles isn't much good.
7. Celebrity- Nsync
Aside from the awesomeness that is this album, Celebrity gave me both my first and second concert experiences, brought me closer to my cousin, and led me to a good friend of mine after I heard her singing Tell Me, Tell Me Baby while lifting weights at swim practice. Unfortunately, listening to Nsync was no longer the 'in' thing at my school when this came out, and forced me into becoming a closet fan.
8. Greatist Hits Live- Journey
a. Journey kicks ass. b. Whereupon asking for this album for Christmas in the list drawing my cousins and I did, my aunt, and subsequently my other aunts and uncles, started looking at me as a little more adult, namely since this was also the music they had listened to growing up.
9. something I don't know the name of because I can't read Greek
Honestly I have no idea what the title of this is, but basically it's a collection of hits that were popular in Greece in 2004, all by Greek artists. I bought this on a whim at a Greek festival some local orthodox church was holding. I had gone for the food (which was quite good, btw) and out of curiousity/boredom. Some of this cd is good, some isn't. But I discovered that listening to what other countries saw as popular was kinda cool. And now I will randomly pick up hits collections from places I go.
10. Hot Fuss- the Killers
Usually I always bought cds based on what I heard on the radio. I heard this one playing in a coffee shop. Usually coffee shop music is whiny and bleeding heart guitarist type stuff (especially at indie hangouts like Lemonjello's, where I heard this), but after running out and getting this the moment after I heard it, I keep my ears peeled at least for a little while, hoping to catch something great again.
