So I took a mini-vacation yesterday. I woke up early and drove to Corpus Christi, someplace I have not been before. It was overcast and sprinkled off and on all day, but not enough to need an umbrella. Corpus Christi is kind of like Ft. Lauderdale....if Ft. Lauderdale were deserted. Aside from the aquarium there was just nobody there. Myabe the weather had something to do with that. Also, it seems most of the city is just oil refineries, as mile markers 10 through 2 were all I saw. When I hit mile 1, it was like Bam! city! and then 0 spat you out into downtown.
The first thing I did was go stand in the ocean. Water was a bit nippy, but not too bad. I had jeans on, so I didn't get too far in. I didn't do too much else the rest of the morning, besides go to the visitor's bureau for a map and a recommendation for a place to eat lunch. I had spinach and cheese covered oysters at an oyster bar downtown, it was a lot better than the last time I ate oysters.
The Texas State Aquarium is in CC, and I went there after lunch. It's not nearly as big as Shedd, but it did have some things Shedd does not. You can pet stingrays! So I did. I was expecting them to feel scaly and fishy, but they don't at all! It's weird. You know those silicon tubes with the liquid in the middle? Or stress toys? They feel like that.
They had a bird of prey/exotic animal show which I went to. Usually those things are rather dumb, but this one was funny; the emcee was hilarious. And they had the owls and falcons flying immediately over your head, holy crap. They also had this african cat that jumped 9ft in the air from a sitting stance- it was pretty impressive.
Another up the Texas State Aquarium has on Shedd is sea turtles. Shedd has 1, this place had at least 7.
The aquarium also had dolphins. :) I skipped the show, since it was at 3, and I left the aquarium at 2:30. Though they have an option (expensive) where you can buy a private training session with the dolphins. I watched that from off to the side and saw all the tricks.
When the dolphins were in the main tank, there was one that was playing basketball with itself. It was hilarious to watch. Here's a short 3 second clip:
After the aquarium, I went to the aircraft carrier they had parked at the shore. It's the USS Lexington, used in WWII. I didn't go in since I didn't wish to pay the entrance fee, but it was cool just to stand next to.
There was a pier next to the ship that I stood on for a while, though it was a bit windy. Someone caught a fish while I was on it- one that they had in the aquarium! Lol. It was huge; 18 inches long with big black stripes and teeth for scraping off barnacles. I asked the guy what kind of fish it was...but I can't remember. I think it started with an A and had a name that sounded official (like a title).
I left CC around 4, and arrived in San Antonio for dinner. On my way, I spied 4 hawks and 2 bald eagles within a half hour span. I've never seen that many birds of prey in that small an area. I stopped at this place that had been closed last time I went. I went to order a lamb burger, but lamb was not in season so I went for a bison burger instead. Delicious.
Overall it was a great day and I feel much more relaxed than I did 2 days ago.
