God is perfect. Man was created in God's image. Logic says therefore that humans should be perfect. So....
Why did original sin happen in the first place?

Proof by contradiction. :-)

In order for God to create free will, which is the only way He could really have a love relationship with us, He had to create a choice that was wrong, or against His will, as well as a choice that was right. If the only option was obeying Him, there would be no choice and therefore no free will. Satan had free will, i.e., the choice to either follow God, or abandon God and set himself up as the supreme being. He chose wrong, and later guided Eve and Adam into choosing incorrectly as well. The sin in both cases was the desire to be equal to or greater than God... and we still get messed up by this now; we don't want God running our lives, because we're convinced we can do it just fine on our own. Just like Satan and Adam and Eve, we want to be our own God, even though all we really end up doing is messing ourselves (and the world) up. :-P
