It snowed yesterday. I am told this city rarely gets snow, so I guess it’s a special occurance. It’s nice to see snow again.
Though, it did get to be a pain at one point. For German today we went up the town mountain as a kind of mini field trip. It was quite difficult getting back down since the snow made it really slippery. I fell one. On our way down near the bottom, I saw a sign that said something like ‘Do not climb when it is snowy/icy. Dangerous.” Ah, irony.

10 am We head over to Alsace (that’s a region), France from Deutschland.

We started out at a castle called Konigsbourg. It was built in 13-something, but renovated in the 19th century. It was mainly a German castle, occupied at some point by Kaiser Wilhelm 2.
I couldn’t get the whole castle in one picture so I took a number of them as to get an idea of the full thing.

I walked around the castle on a kind of self guided path. Half of it was outside

The rest of it was inside, but still cold.

This is a mural of someone. Probably a legend, due to the dragon. It looked pretty cool, and it’s quite big. The guy is bigger than life size.

Royal family tree.

Not entirely sure what these are, but I think they designate different kings.

Arms rack. There were 4 of these in that room. That’s a lot of spears.

Whoever occupied this place (or rather, who it was renovated to look like lived there) had a bit of an obsession with deer. Check out the chandalier- all deer.

So then we head over to Colmar for lunch. We had an hour-ish there. Most people had no time for anything but lunch, since I guess French waiters are slow. I went to a little sandwhich place, since it was cheaper. What I had though, I didn’t need anything else to eat. I had a sandwhich of which I can’t remember the name, but it had ham and cheese with cheese again on top of the top slice. The cheese was very creamy and rich.
Afterwords the sweet shops were way too tempting to avoid. The guy I was with got a slab of chocolate with apricot and fig (goes well together, even if you wouldn’t think), and I got some kind of orange pastry. It’s hard to describe, but it was really good. I saved half of it for later; that I finished yesterday.
So then I walked around and explored the town a bit. There were a few museums in town, including the second most visited museum in France. Unfortunately, they were all closed from 12-2 (we were there from 1-2). :P So basically I just walked around a bit, looking at old buildings. I stumbled upon this old church-

Cool because it’s yellow. The roof is also patterned in flowers, which you don’t see in Germany.

Next we head to the winery nearby and get a tour. Then they let us taste some wine. 3 whites, no reds, which is kinda a bummer. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a ‘taste’ because they gave us about a third of a glass. This is me on sample 3.

Yea, so basically I don’t like white wine. Too bitter. The first one we had was sparkling, the second dry, and the third sweet. Lots of people ended up buying bottles, but not here. I’d buy some as a gift, but it’s too expensive to ship home. As I said, it was more of a wine drinking than a wine tasting- basically I drank a full glass is 20 minutes. Mixed tastes, since there was no palate clearing crackers (I’ve watched wine tastings before). I was so sick afterwords. But hey, at least I can say I went wine tasting in France.

That was my day pretty much. By then it was about 5, got back to Freiburg around 6, ate dinner and chilled the rest of the evening. Not like I was about to go out drinking lol.

hahahahahaha that's WAY too much wine for a wine-tasting... and I can't believe you actually drank every "sample" they gave you... that takes guts :-P
Oh and about the sign on the mountain... that is SO Germany... enough said.
