I started watching Mad Men the other day. So far I'm only 2 episodes in and am currently undecided as to my opinion on the show. I find the women on this show sofar really infuriating. I mean, were women really like that back then? Of course, the men really don't seem all that much better. I would have never survived the decade.

Yes. Why, what did you think they were like? Someone needs to read The Feminine Mystique!! That was the whole reason the feminist movement happened. Example: my mother was told she couldn't go to college unless she became a nurse or a teacher. She had to live at home until she moved in with my father after they were married. That's just how things were.

I don't know much about the 60's because my parents don't really remember the 60's. I mean, in 1960 my mother was still in diapers and my father was just barely out of them. (and yea, ok, I haven't read The Feminine Mystique either)

This is what I get for studying medieval German history rather than American cultural history.

Nah, I think it's mostly just a state of disbelief. Like, to know about women's prior societal roles is one thing, to actually see it played out is another.

They TOTALLY were like that. My understanding of the 1st season of Mad Men, that the 7th or 8th episode it really gets amazing. Of course I haven't started watching it yet!

It's a great show, because the creators realized that the world of elite Manhattan only 50 years ago has become an alien one to many of us, even those of us who come from the 'right sort' of background.
