Stolen from...the entire [community profile] gaeta_squee fandom.

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Felix boards the bus to the same stares he gets all the time now. As the bus begins to pull out, a man sits next to him and introduces himself as Tom. Tom’s got on a jean jacket covered in peace signs and doves, but Felix can tell he’s also got a side-arm hidden under the jacket. It’s an interesting statement.

“You’re one of the ones who got sent over there, huh?” Tom says. “Unfair, what they do to you boys. Stealing away the youth of America without ever giving them a chance.” Felix had never thought of it that way before, the military doing this to him. He’d always thought he’d done it to himself. Felix doesn’t tell Tom he wasn’t drafted.

“We gotta put it right, you know? Give the people a voice. Stop forcing people into war, let them decide for themselves. That’s what America’s supposed to be about. That’s what democracy really means. Nixon’s forgotten that!”

Felix simply nods and says, “The world is upside down.”

“The world is upside down, man, I’m gonna have to use that. Yes it is, man, yes it is.” Tom smiles and nods his head a few times. Felix can see the wheels turning. The world really is upside down, though probably not in the same way for both them.

Felix thinks about sleeping, but the memories of Sam smiling, strumming his imaginary guitar and Louisa’s pleading tears prevent him from getting any rest. He decides to talk to Tom. Felix doesn’t care about the man, probably never will, but he’s there, and he’s not staring. “Where you headed?”

“Ohio,” replies Tom. “Word of a big protest stirring up there, and I’m going to be a part of it. Doing what I can to be heard.”

“You think it’s making any difference?” Felix asks. From where he sits, he doesn’t think so. But he wonders what the man next to him thinks, if it’s still possible to believe in your country when you haven’t been over there.

Oo, I'd forgotten about that story. I love this one though, good choice.

Hippie!Tom. Totally how I would imagine Zarek during the 70's. Felix sees the irony in Tom's get up, but Tom doesn't at all here. From all the movies/tv I've seen about that movement, there were a number of people like Tom, peace at all cost kinda people.

Tom has a gun. Felix wisely keeps his mouth shut, lest it look like he supports the war.

“We gotta put it right, you know? Give the people a voice. Stop forcing people into war, let them decide for themselves. That’s what America’s supposed to be about. That’s what democracy really means. Nixon’s forgotten that!”
Ah yes, Tom and his democracy speeches. Someone asked me in their feedback if Nixon = Roslin, and no, it doesn't entirely. I see Roslin as more of a Johnson/Nixon cross than one or the other. Nixon just happened to be president during the time this story is set. Anyone else, Tom would still be ranting.

That's really just a nod to canon there, and their scene in the brig.

Kent State. I don't think it drew in a lot of outside protestors other than people mingling around the college, but it was the only protest where people died, hence, Ohio.

“You think it’s making any difference?” Felix asks. From where he sits, he doesn’t think so. But he wonders what the man next to him thinks, if it’s still possible to believe in your country when you haven’t been over there.
Just like New Caprica/raptor of doom really frakked up Felix, Vietnam did quite a number on Felix. Which is kinda where this story begins, with the destruction of his belief that he was ever doing the right thing in the first place. Here, Felix wonders if it's still possible to believe in authority if he hadn't been to Nam (in essence, wonders if it would have been possible for him to be on the other side of the mutiny.)

Umthat hole glowy spine piece :D

Heehee. Yay porn!
This whole ficlet arises out of a conversation I had with [personal profile] lls_mutant, where I said that Louis was never going to let Felix top, because he loves the sensation of Felix's warm tingly spine pressed against his chest. Since FUOT ends with the two of them just starting their relationship (which is how I intended it, back when I was still in the middle of DUFE), this scene wouldn't fit in the story itself. But it begged to be written, so I wrote it as its own piece.

“Once or twice,” Felix lied. It’d been a few more times than that, but in bed with Louis was not the appropriate place to be bringing up his programmed desires for Gaius Baltar.
I like to imagine that the sex that happened between Felix & Gaius was quick dirty against the wall frakking, where they were both still partly, if not mostly clothed. Hence, Baltar did not get any glowy spine action.

In bed was the last place he wanted to remind himself that he was basically a walking computer. This hasn't been too long since he got out of jail, and the rest of the fleet is still kinda icy, so he's a bit nervous about bringing up the whole cylon thing. Of course, Hoshi shows him, in his matter of fact sort of way, that being a cylon can be kinda awesome if you look at it in a certain way. :D

“I should hope not. Because after that, I -” said Felix, accentuating the statement with a kiss. “Am not letting you have anyone else.” *Iz unabashed shipper*

Swimming in the data stream had never been like this. Galactica’s computer systems were something else entirely. The languages, the codes, the programming, was all so different than anything in the data stream. It was so foreign yet so familiar at the same time. Felix had thought he knew every bit of this ship before. Looking at Galactica from the inside, literally becoming a part of the ship, Felix realized there was a whole other side to her he’d overlooked. He felt connected, not like an appliance, but in an ephemeral sense, in a way he hadn’t realized he wanted to feel. In an instant, Felix knew exactly why Adama loved this ship so much. If only the Old Man could see it like this.

The virus was easy to find. It stuck out like a Sagitarron at a military gala, clearly out of place. It was a dark stain on Galactica’s brand of beauty, and Felix couldn’t rid the computer of it fast enough. “Temperature is going back down throughout the ship. All decks reporting that the lights are back on. We’ve taken care of it, sir,” Felix heard someone say far off in the distance. Swimming in the data stream had been like an orgasm, but this…

“Lieutenant,” the Admiral ordered to someone, causing Felix to snap out of his trance. The Admiral directed the officer he’d been calling to obtain some bandages. Felix began to remove the cable from his arm. He tried not to scream in pain, as taking it out seemed to hurt far worse than putting it in. He felt the metal scrape his bones again as he pulled slowly. One last gentle tug and Felix was free from immediate pain, though it still lingered strongly. A large drop of blood hit the floor from where it dripped off the end of the cable. The blue glow now had a hint of red.

“Thank you,” whispered Lt. Hoshi as he walked by before circling the CIC for an all-systems check.

“Let’s hope that’s the last virus we have to deal with,” Adama said, and looked at Felix. He could tell the Admiral was still not pleased with his presence on board, but the angry glare had softened a bit.

It was then that Felix saw an opportunity to protect this ship, in a way only he could. “Sir, if I may-“

All eyes in CIC snapped to him. Felix froze momentarily. He’d never liked being the center of attention. Especially when everyone was looking at him like he was out of his mind. “I can install a firewall on Galactica’s systems. Then you won’t have to worry about another virus.”

“Yeah? Like that last one you installed?” Captain Kelly snapped.

“I know what I’m doing now. The cylons wouldn’t be able to penetrate it if they tried,” replied Felix.

Any sympathy the Admiral has started to show before disappeared in an instant. “I’ll think about it,” he growled. Without a moment’s hesitation, the guards shackled Felix up and led him back to his cell.

Felix had thought he knew every bit of this ship before. I had a hard time describing what swimming in the data stream of Galactica would be like, but I realize, Felix would probably have that same problem in this moment. It's so overwhelming for him, and it's one of those things you just have to feel to get.

He felt connected, not like an appliance, but in an ephemeral sense, in a way he hadn’t realized he wanted to feel. In an instant, Felix knew exactly why Adama loved this ship so much. If only the Old Man could see it like this.

Felix had a lot of love for Galactica before, but it really grows quite a bit here. Not feeling like a toaster is a good thing too.

The virus was easy to find. It stuck out like a Sagitarron at a military gala, clearly out of place.

I don't really like that line, but I had trouble coming up with any sort of analogy that would fit better. :/

It was a dark stain on Galactica’s brand of beauty, and Felix couldn’t rid the computer of it fast enough. “Temperature is going back down throughout the ship. One of those lights beaming down, chorus singing type moments here.

A large drop of blood hit the floor from where it dripped off the end of the cable. The blue glow now had a hint of red.

I don't know if this translates as well to paper as I see it in my head. You really have to read this paragraph visually. I had an image of, you know when they show the cables and the ends are a blue color? I have an image of Felix pulling it out and it not being blue, but a light shade of red. Both from the blood and from the aftereffects of cylon interaction.

Felix doesn't realize it entirely, but this is really the turning point in his relationship with Adama. Adama begins to rethink his perceptions of cylon!Felix in this moment, especially since he's seen how Sharon turned out to be after she did exactly the same thing.
On a side note, I'd love to see someone take on a part of DUFE or FUOT for the next remix. There are so many people's perspectives you could get into here, and how they deal with Felix being a cylon. Adama and Baltar would be the most interesting to look at, I think.

Oh Felix. Call back to season 1 and the soap episode (aka the scene when I realized Felix was secretly a genius, and therefore, high on the awesome scale). Kelly has obviously not forgotten what happened after with the Centurians.

“I know what I’m doing now. The cylons wouldn’t be able to penetrate it if they tried,” replied Felix. So there, Captain Kelly!

Any sympathy the Admiral has started to show before disappeared in an instant. “I’ll think about it,” he growled. Without a moment’s hesitation, the guards shackled Felix up and led him back to his cell.
Adama might be ticked, but notice he doesn't say no.
