My goodness what a weekend.
Friday night I went ice skating in downtown Grand Rapids. We got lost on the way there and ended up in a residential area, til someone firgured out that we'd needed to go south instead of north. It was a lot of fun, despite it being a little chilly and a bit crowded (awfully small rink for such a big city). Came back and played a few rounds of euchre with a couple friends while enjoying Thin Mints (mmmm), after which we watched Shrek 2. Up til around 2 this night, right before parietals started.
Saturday- Had to go to the men's basketball game for pep band. Since I dont so much like basketball I did crosswords instead of watching them play. Not like I even know anyone on the team either. We won 109- oh..78 or so. Yea. Then I moved my car from the parking lot it was in, since they had needed to be moved for snow removal, had dinner, then went to a german club meeting. That was also much fun- we played cards (that got interesting lol) and spoke german. Somewhere in there I did laundry- ran out of detergent so I was using about half the amount in the 2 loads I needed to do. Also ran out of money on my laundry card after load 1. Then the dryer I threw one load in was busted, which I didnt know til after I had already spent the money for a cycle. :P
Today- went to Detroit area. There's a diversity program here in my hall whom this trip was for, but it was open to anyone who lives here. Yay for the perks of living in Scott this semester :) First stop was a Holocaust museum. We had a guided tour, which was very informative, but I much rather prefer looking at museum exhibits on my own terms, no matter what museum I'm at. Just a peeve of mine and we all have different interests anyway. A Holocaust survivor came and talked- I think he told the abbreviated version because we didn't hear much. That was very nice though.
Ate lunch at a Lebanese restaurant in Dearborn, which was quite good. We had our own special room with the really long table set up for us. I'd say we had about...40 people or so that went. The guy next to me spilled his drink on me, that was lovely. lol
So then we head over to this mosque also in Dearborn (arab capital of the US), or shall I say what's in the process of becoming a mosque. The outside looked really cool but inside it was just cement walls. The way they spoke about it, I thought we were going to something that was actually....finished. Had to wear a head scarf, mine wasn't quite wide enough and I had to hold it in place under my chin. The reason we had to- let's see if I can actually explain this correctly- is because women are more beautiful than men, the hair is the most beautiful part of the woman (at least according to the guy that talked to us), one must do everything possible not to think bad thoughts, seeing a women's hair will cause a man to lust after her beauty, so thus women must cover their heads. Now keep in mind I am no expert on Islam- that's just what I was told by the guy there. He was Shia, or Shiite, so I'm not sure if the same rules apply for Sunni or not. I found him more interesting than the Holocaust museum, mainly because I know so little about Islam and Islamic tradition and I've learned about the Holocaust on more than one occassion.
That was my weekend, a busy one, but a fun one.
