Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, I discovered that one of my acquaintances from college got married this weekend. I have a strong suspicion her marriage was arranged. For starters, she's been living in Georgia since graduation and he lives in New Zealand. I mean, they could have met online or on vacation of something, but considering her cultural background (they're both Indian), I'm getting the feeling it may have been arranged.
And hey, don't get me wrong, I wish her all the best. It's just surreal, the possibility that I know someone my age who's in an arranged marriage.

She's actually got a friend at work who's in an arranged marriage, and they've talked about the process some. It's VERY different than what I ever pictured. I guess now, they have internet sites similar to match.com, and when they find one they like, it's a very lengthy process, and the entire family is involved. In her case, she was able to say no, and actually rejected four suitors before she chose her husband. And aside from the fact her MIL drives her bonkers, it sounds like she's very, very happy in her marriage.
But yeah, it was a lot more liberal than what I'd pictured. And while I'm sure this isn't the case for all of the people in arranged marriages, it sounds like it might be the case for a lot that live in the western world.
