I just watched Letters from Iwo Jima, and I have to say, I liked this one better. Flags is more about what happens after they get back from Iwo Jima, Letters is about the battle itself. And when you find yourself rooting for the Japanese in a WWII movie, you know it's well made.
I recognized a few shots that were shown in both movies, but it wasn't very many, and most just explosions/gunfire.
And really, kudos to Clint Eastwood for making a movie almost entirely in Japanese.

I've never been a huge fan of Clint Eastwood as an actor, but I'm starting to really, really like the movies he directs.

the lead guy- the young one- is a Japanese boy band singer. I saw that in the extras! I thought that was pretty cool.
