Curling is harder than it looks.

I couldn't believe how many people were there! 300+! For curling!

Well, they didn't really explain the rules of the game, they just let us try out sweeping and throwing the stone. Sweeping is pretty much exactly what you imagine. The point is to smooth out the ice to make the rock go faster/further.

Throwing the rock is the tough part. You start in a squat with one foot on something similar to the starting blocks you see in track. This is the foot you push off with, and the one that gets extended behind you. (This is where your power in launching the rock comes from, and those rocks are heavy!) Your other foot is flat on the ice and you keep your knee bent. This foot has a slip on over it, which is basically a friction-less cover so you can glide further. It is also very easy to fall on your ass with it on. Keeping that stance is a hell of a lot trickier than it looks.

I could never tell if sweeping was to speed it up or slow it down.

That's odd that they didn't explain the rules...

Not enough time. They wanted everyone to get to try it, and 400 people in 2 hours doesn't leave much time for rule explaining.
