The best part about layering is that its essentially non-destructive (meaning that the original image underneath doesn't lose data- every adjustment directly to the image erases pixel data). I don't know if GIMP has adjustment layers- a layer that holds adjustments like contrast and color balance off of the original image so that you can tinker with them together (instead of say, realizing 20 alterations down the line that you'd rather the whites were brighter and the table was actually green.)

Does that make any sense?

It makes a lot of sense, yes. I'm sure once I get the hang of it, it'll be great. The thing right now isn't that the features don't make sense; it's that I don't know how to use them. But I'll get there eventually.
