Question: Besides airports and AAA, where can you exchange money in the United States? It's been 4 years since I've done it (and yet I still have Florint lying around my house), and last time I was in Canada my debit card wouldn't work, so I don't want to be stuck.

This morning, I had what was supposed to be my final dentist appointment. I was gonna get the crown for my implant, then have a spiffy new tooth and finally be done with seeing the dentist. Thing is, they went to go put it on, and the tooth had been cast backwards. So they had to take another mold (not a pleasant experience), and now I have to wait *another* 3 weeks before I can get this done. For those keeping track, that would be the week immediately before I move.

The only plus side to this was that when I called work to tell them my appointment ran over and I wouldn't make the start of the meeting, they told me I wasn't needed at the meeting. I used the opportunity to run by the post office and get my phone.

Most banks should exchange currency for you. I'm not sure where you'd get the best rate, but that's what I did in the UK and NZ, and I exchanged some of my leftover foreign currency when I got home.

Sorry about the dentist--that sucks. How does one cast something *backwards*, though? What did they do that they couldn't just...turn it around, if that makes any sense?

This is the way my dentist explained it:

The dentist did a partial mold, which meant they put the model screw in when they did the cast. The screw is specially fitted to the tooth will fit a certain way. Well, the lab took the screw out of the mold when they were supposed to leave it in. So when they realized they goofed, they tried to put the model back in but forgot which way it when. So when the dentist screwed on the crown to my actual screw (similar to the model), it screwed in so that the high part which is supposed to be on the outside of your mouth was on the inside instead. The crown won't go on any other way because of how the screw is designed (which I presume has something to do with getting it to fit snugly).

exchanging money: at the bank. I had a random 5 CAD that I had no use for, the bank took care of it.

your bank will exchange it. You might be too close to your departure date for that to work though and be sure to ask about exchange fees. At my bank they're quite steep.
If it is indeed too close to you leaving, check the logos on your ATM card then look them up online. You should be able to find out if your card is compatible with Canadian banks atm's and which ones. I usually get money from the ATM in the airport, it's the one the most likely to work for you. Good luck!

The dentist info sucks. Ouch!

Would you like me to come down there and punch your dentist right in the face? Or, I suppose, the lab people.

Wow, all these people have better banks than I do. Mine would not exchange my leftover 25 pounds (oh darn, I'll have to visit the UK again). Then again, maybe they're better about Canadian money.

I've also had poor luck finding exchange places in airports unless I was in an international terminal.

Call your bank / debit card issuer and ask them about it! Because it should work in Canadia. Maybe last year it wasn't accepted because they were trying to protect you against fraud, but if you called them and said "hey, I'm going to be out of the country for a week, please let me access my money" you should be okay. (The first time I went to Canada I had to call the credit-card company from the gas station and tell them that yes, it's really me trying to buy gas in Kelowna.)

Punch the lab people. I actually like my dentist.

The last time I exchanged money was...in Frankfurt. In the airport. 4 years ago. They changed the look of the 10 while I was away, and I freaked out when I saw it was tinted orange.

I called my credit & debit card companies yesterday, so I should be good there. I hope.
