Welllll... it really depends on what other expenses you have. To use me as an example, my rent is $635/month. I make (after taxes) about $1800/month. But I also have a car payment ($169) and student loan payments ($165 + $150). I have electric, water, and internet to pay every month. If I didn't have the car payment (as you don't) or the student loans (not sure if you do), I would be able to afford a lot more for rent. But this about my limit right now.

My advice for Austin is to look at apartment complexes on the east side or far north for cheapness, and don't automatically discount studios. If you don't do a lot of entertaining, there's no real reason you need a full 1-bedroom. I would've gotten a studio myself except I have the cat, and I can't sleep with him in the room.

I have no car payments, and my student loan payment is only $50 per month, though I'm still paying off my ER visit from December. I really should look into an apartment hunter, because the places I've been don't have studios.

I used an apartment finder and it made the process sooooo much less stressful. They do all the work for you, and then you meet up with them and they take you on appointments to look at the different places.
