I think that your problem may be that you want "people" to want you there. I think that it was Lincoln who said, "You can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." I think rather than trying to be welcomed by "people" it would be better to aim to be welcomed by individuals. There will always be naysayers and flat out jerks, but remember that there are individuals who are more than willing to welcome you.
