This morning I got up extra early and went to an outdoor sports bar that was open specially for the World Cup...at 6:30AM! They had breakfast tacos and whatever you wanted to drink. My email list notified me that they were showing the Germany game this morning, so I decided why not? It was a lot of fun, actually. All German fans except for one lady wearing a Serbia t-shirt. I bet she had fun gloating. Although the main reason Germany lost that game was because of shitty reffing. Nine yellow cards???

In other signs of the coming apocolypse, England may not advance at all. They couldn't manage a point against Algeria of all teams? Although the advancing system is a little complicated...

I'm watching Take This Sabbath Day. They are laying on the poiltics like MAD this episode. The death penalty is wrong and immoral! Everyone at the White House is so outright offended by the idea of sentencing someone to death that they must do anything to stop it! It's just so horrible what they're doing to this man!

Ugh. Thank you Charlie for providing at least one counterpoint to all this.


Also, I'm pretty sure the Supreme Court wouldn't order an execution time that hadn't been ordered by a lower court already. The Supreme Court doesn't hear issues of guilt, it hears issues of legality. As such, the Supreme Court issues decisions, not punishment. So surely they knew this execution time was coming already, it would not have come strictly from the Supreme Court.

(And having Mendoza on the bench? Well, I don't know what the underlying issue in this supposed case was, but I can tell you, the Supreme Court would not grant an appeal solely based on the idea that they thought the death penalty was wrong. That breaches so many articles of the Constitution, it's not funny.)

I watched In Excelsius Deo the other day, and I've got to thinking. Not only do I think CJ is right, I don't think the President and Danny's argument of "we can't punish people for what's inside their heads" stands. We can and we already do. The criminal justice system distinguishes between premeditated (first degree) murder, murder in the second and third degrees, and manslaughter, (not to mention self-defence and insanity pleas, which both work toward with harsher sentencing for the more intent involved. In other words, we're punishing people based on "what's inside their heads."

There can be other arguments against hate crime legislation (danger of overusing it, it's hard to convict so what's the point?, etc.) but I don't think this one works.

I don't even have to have my eyes on the game to know what's going on, I can tell what's going on just by the inflexion in the announcer's v. I ♥ Univision.

A group of people are meeting up at 6:30 Thursday to watch the Germany game live/eat breakfast tacos. I am not a morning person, but I want to go. (I mean, hey. It's pretty close to my office so my commute will be shorter, plus I can get breakfast for like $2.)

Kutner. Gaeta's death I saw coming within the first few minutes of The Oath. Kutner? Did not see this one coming at all. Completely unexpected (not to mention, completely out of character, but that's a rant for another day.) He was so much fun on this show, and it's gotten so serious since he left. The team was so much better when he was there. Whyyyy did you go have to work for the White House, Kal Penn? :( :(
